I opted to do an upgrade from my Vista to 7 since i didnt want to lose my program settings, etc. I am running:
MS Office 2007 (entire suite including Project and Onenote)
VS 2005 and 2008
SQL Server 2005 and 2008
Virtual PC 2005 (need to reconfigure MS Loopback if used)
Windows Live Suite (no parental controls)
Quicken 2008
Roxio 10 (Loads but need setup disks to self fix)
Zune 3.0 (Zune still syncs, WinMo still syncs)
iTunes 8 (iphone still syncs)
Skype
So far, all hardware works as it did before (bluetooth, wifi, webcam, thumbprint reader, SCSI/SATA, etc).
I upgraded my bios to A15 and backed up my machine with Windows Home Server first. Then started the install. It took over 4 hours to upgrade!!!
The setup program initially warned me of only two problems. One, the SCSI might not be supported and Two, Visual Studio 2005 was not compatible. The SCSI issue never happened (thank goodness)....
Failures: Daemon Tools, Norton Protection Center (full suite)
Issues: Virtual PC 2005 - when launched, it complained that my virtual machine could not find my "Microsoft Loopback Connector". Checking it, it looks like Win7 removes it during the upgrade. No biggie...the Virtual PC still works and is fast.
Success...Much faster boot, and application execution.
After installing Windows 7 dont forget to install the Win7 Update Patch (KB961367) - don't add you music (mp3's) to your music library until you do this!!!

Oh good. I'm relieved it works on the XPS. 4 hours is a pretty long time though (I imaged 1 hour at most). One thing that I've heard (but not confirmed) is that Windows 7's Windows Media Player has the tendency to corrupt mp3 files. Have you experienced this?
ReplyDeleteI got my Win7 from the MSDN Subscriber Site. With the download was the patch for this bug as well as release notes that warn of this issue before the install. Just run the patch the first thing you do after Win7 boots up for the first time. Initially i installed Win7 on VirutalPC under Vista. It loaded in under 30min. It was super fast. It looked like it did a LOT of file moving when it upgraded my primary OS.Good luck!
ReplyDeletewhat touchpad driver are you using? My touchpad wont work with the 7000build. I have tried dells driver and the one directly from synaptecs website. If i try to let windows find a driver it installs drivers for a touchscreen from ideacom.

ReplyDeleteHey can you comment on how you got the bluetooth to work again? Same configuration but my bluetooth will NOT work. The driver installs fine but I cannot add devices, transfer files, pair, etc.
ReplyDeleteMy Bluetooth devices is a Dell Truemobile 355 Bluetooth + EDR. The driver is by Microsoft version 6.1.7000.0 dated 6/21/2006.Occasionally, my bluetooth will not wake up from sleep/hibernate. I even had the 'Power Management' settings set so it does not power this device off to conserve battery power. Other than that, it pairs fine with my WinMo Samsung Jack, MS Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

ReplyDeleteNo, i did not do anything special. In Device Manager, do you see under "Bluetooth Radios" both "Dell Truemobile 355 Bluetooth + EDR" and "Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator"? You may also want to try to remove the Bluetooth Device and have Win7 reinstall it.
ReplyDeleteHey yup I checked under Bluetooth radios, both of them are there. And I have also reinstalled the Bluetooth device driver several times, downloaded from Dell as well as downloading from Windows Update and Broadcom

ReplyDeleteHey sorry for the slow responseThe device I am trying to connect to is a Sony Vaio laptop. The Vaio has been tested and the bluetooth is working properly on that laptop. Now I am trying to connect my laptop with the Vaio to start a file transfer and its failing at the detection stage

ReplyDeleteI have since done a clean install of Windows 7 on my XPS M1330 and after the install, 7 did a "windows update" and found all the necessary drivers for the webcam and finger reader. The finger reader that windows installed for me was so much better than the one that came with my dell. simple and straight forward. if windows update didnt find it for you, you might have a differently configured m1330.
ReplyDeleteCareful! For some reason, my fan wouldn't spin up to speed after installing Win 7... so if your computer stays silent... it's likely too good to be true. Just a warning from personal experience.
